1. SZA to be honored by Songwriters Hall of Fame with Hal David Starlight Award

The American singer-songwriter-SZA is to be honored by the Songwriters Hall of Fame with the Hal David Starlight Award, which recognizes young songwriters. The Hal David Starlight Award, created in 2004, was named in honor of SHOF Chairman Emeritus Hal David, for his longtime support of young songwriters. Award recipients are “gifted young songwriters who are making a significant impact in the music industry with their original songs,” according to the announcement.

Also, she will receive the award at the 53rd Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards dinner, slated for Thursday, June 13 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Previously announced 2024 inductees include Hillary Lindsey; Timothy Mosley — aka Timbaland; Dean Pitchford; R.E.M. (Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe) and Steely Dan (Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker). Veteran hitmaker Diane Warren will receive the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award.

2. Davido, Cardi B, and Sexxy Red to headline BET Experience

The BET Experience 2024 will be headlined by Afrobeats sensation Davido, alongside American artists Cardi B, Sexxy Red, Gunna, and other acclaimed performers. The event is a week-long celebration of entertainment and culture, and it kicks off on June 26 and runs until 29. The week will start with a late-night comedy series featuring Chris Spencer, Michael Blackson, and Tiffany Haddish. Headlined by Cardi B, Davido, Queen Latifah, Common, and The Roots, the concerts will mark the triumphant return of the BET Experience in Los Angeles, just days before the 2024 BET Awards.

The star-studded lineup of the concert series signals the return of this eagerly anticipated event after nearly a five-year hiatus. The pandemic previously forced the cancellation of the BET Experience in 2020. The headliners are scheduled to grace the stage on June 28 at Crypto.com Arena, while The Roots, Common, Queen Latifah, and Jungle Brothers will electrify the crowd on June 29 at the iconic Hollywood Bowl.

3. South Africa: Forbes family react to upcoming book about AKA

Tony and Lynn Forbes have distanced themselves from an upcoming book about their late son, Kiernan “AKA” Forbes. NB Publishers revealed last Thursday that journalist Melinda Ferguson was to release a book about Anele Tembe and Kiernan “AKA” Forbes’ relationship, titled “When Love Kills,” which is expected to be published this month. On Monday the Forbes family distanced themselves from the book.

“We are not in any way associated with Melinda Ferguson’s book and we do not endorse it. We distance ourselves from the contents of the book. When Melinda reached out to us, we respectfully and rightfully declined to contribute to her book. We cannot give any further comment on the book as we are unaware of its contents. We do, however, find the intended publication of the book and the timing distasteful and opportunistic.”

According to NB Publishers, the book details “a whirlwind of toxic obsession, alleged substance abuse and violence.” In a Facebook post, Melinda said a leak had forced her to go public about the release of the book despite her intention to keep it under wraps until the last minute and she had received a lot of criticism.

4. Donald Glover says he’s retiring his Childish Gambino moniker after two more albums

Following an appearance during Tyler, the Creator’s set at Coachella, Donald Glover has announced that he will be releasing his final two Childish Gambino albums. The acclaimed actor and musician has won multiple Grammy Awards for his previous albums. Speaking on his Instagram broadcast, Gilga, Glover shared that he plans to drop the first LP, a complete version of his “3.15.20” album, under the original title “Atavista,” and it will have a vinyl release. His final Gambino project will be the soundtrack to his upcoming film, “Bando Storm and the New World.”

Glover noted that the soundtrack for “Bando Storm and the New World” was inspired by Prince’s album for “Batman” in 1989 and the soundtrack for “Batman Forever” in 1995. Glover also shared that he has an upcoming anime in the works with comedian, Zack Fox and a cartoon titled “Country Mouse, City Mouse.”

5. Jude Bellingham ‘calls out’ footballing authorities for failing to protect players from racist abuse

Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham has called racism in Spanish football “a massive problem” and demanded the authorities do more to protect players. Bellingham’s team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni was the latest victim of racist abuse in Spain when he was targeted by Mallorca fans after scoring in Madrid’s 1-0 win on Saturday. “It’s mad you say that. I didn’t know. In the games, you get used to it. I wasn’t even aware of the incident. It’s a massive problem; more has to be done. It’s a horrible way for a player to prepare for a game, knowing you’re going to be racially abused,” Bellingham told a press conference.

“It’s disgusting; people in the game need to do more. Vini gets attention, the game would miss players like him if he decided to take a break from the game. More needs to be done. No one deserves that so it’s a call out for the people who run the game. I doubt it will happen. You have to play your game and hope the people look after you—they are not doing it well enough at the moment.” In addition, Real forward Vinicius Junior has repeatedly called out racism in Spain after being abused by Valencia supporters last year. The Brazilian burst into tears in a press conference last month when discussing everything he had experienced.
