1. Da’Vine Joy Randolph wins her first Oscar for performance in ‘The Holdovers’

Da’Vine Joy Randolph won her first Oscar for best supporting actress in “The Holdovers.” In her emotional speech, Randolph thanked her mother for giving her the push she needed to start her journey as an actress and her teacher for believing in her. Randolph took home the Oscar on Sunday for her role as a boarding school head cook who is grieving her son.

The actress had already received numerous accolades for her role in “The Holdovers,” including a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Critics Choice Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. At the Academy Awards, Randolph was up against Emily Blunt in “Oppenheimer,” Danielle Brooks in “The Color Purple,” America Ferrera in “Barbie,” and Jodie Foster in “Nyad.”

Other winners of the night include Cillian Murphy (Best Actor in a Leading Role – “Oppenheimer”), Emma Stone (Best Actress in a Leading Role – “Poor Things”),  Christopher Nolan (Best Directing – “Oppenheimer”), and Robert Downey Jr who won his first Oscar for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in “Oppenheimer.”

2. Vanessa Hudgens is pregnant 

The 2024 Oscars began with a pleasant bump as Vanessa Hudgens opened the red carpet pre-show with a baby bump in full view. Donning a long-sleeve number with a full train, the 35-year-old actor-singer was grinning from ear to ear as she cradled her growing belly while posing for photos. During the 30-minute show she hosted on ABC, Hudgens accepted congratulations from various celebrities on the impending birth of her first child.

In December, the High School Musical alum married Major League Baseball outfielder Cole Tucker in Tulum, Mexico after announcing their engagement early last year. They were first linked in 2020 when Hudgens posted a photo of herself captioned “date night” and was photographed holding hands with Tucker later that night.

3. Phyno joins Burna Boy on stage in Washington D.C

In the Washington D.C leg of Burna Boy’sI Told Them” tour at the 20000-capacity Capital Arena, attendees received a pleasant surprise as the African Giant welcomed rap icon, Phyno on stage. The duo performed the remix of the rapper’s hit song, “Do I” before the excited crowd.

Originally released in September 2023, “Do I” enjoyed commercial success across Nigeria. Following that, Phyno tapped Burna Boy for the remix in December of the same year, leading the song to record even more success. 

4. Rupert Murdoch, 92, is engaged for the sixth time

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch is engaged to his girlfriend, Elena Zhukova, 67, a spokesman said on Thursday, marking his fifth trip down the aisle. (The media mogul’s engagement to former San Francisco police chaplain Ann Lesley Smith didn’t lead to marriage as the pair called off the engagement weeks later). The wedding will be held in California at Murdoch’s vineyard and estate, Moraga.

The bride-to-be is a retired molecular biologist whom Murdoch began dating in the summer, per the New York Times. And according to the Daily Mail, the couple had met through Murdoch’s third wife, Wendi Deng

The impending nuptials come just months after Murdoch stepped down as chairman of Fox and News Corp, ending a more than seven-decade career at the helm of a sprawling media empire.

5. Anthony Joshua defeats Francis Ngannou

Anthony Joshua knocked out Francis Ngannou in devastating fashion in the second round for a decisive victory in Friday’s heavyweight match in Saudi Arabia. Joshua knocked down Ngannou in the first round, knocked him down again in the second round, and then delivered the knockout punch at 2:38 of the second round. According to reports, Ngannou was out cold for more than a minute and had to receive oxygen. 

The victory was the fourth straight for Joshua (28-3) after his back-to-back losses to Oleksandr Usyk of Ukraine. But it was a setback for Ngannou, who knocked down Tyson Fury during his pro debut in October following his training with Mike Tyson.
