eing single on Valentine’s Day requires courage, a sound mind, and healthy self-esteem. This is due to the warped mentality around the Valentine’s celebration. We often forget that love isn’t just a romantic affair, but has more depth than we give it credit for. I know that words like this may sound like yet another cheesy attempt to comfort the singletons, but Lover’s Day isn’t all about being booed up.

Eventually, everything boils down to how we perceive being single on Valentine’s Day. If you’ve been on a roller coaster of stressful relationships, this could be an opportunity to sit back, relax, and take care of yourself for a change. There are other relationships we need to tend to apart from the one who gives us butterflies in our stomachs. If you have a loving family and healthy friendships, planning to service these relationships during Lover’s Day isn’t off-topic. Simply put, make this day an opportunity for self-care and celebrating love in all its forms.

Here are some ideas to employ if you’re single on Valentine’s Day…

  • Spoil yourself: At the expense of sounding like a broken record, pamper yourself with a spa day, buy yourself something nice, or indulge in your favorite food or dessert. Singleness isn’t a crime. Rather than sulking at home wondering why you’re still single, love yourself. You deserve it, girl!
  • Chill and have fun: A movie night, potluck dinner, or simply spending quality time with friends who uplift you will boost your spirits. And if these are your favorite people, a fun day is guaranteed.
  • Try new things: Take up a new hobby or activity that you’ve been curious about. Use this time to invest in your personal growth and interests. If you’ve always wondered what your life would have been as an artist, register for a neighborhood sip&paint day. Nothing is stopping you — explore the possibilities, it’s far from boring.

  • Show love to others: Being single on Valentine’s Day could be a blessing in disguise as it offers you more time and flexibility. If you focus on your lover alone, there might be little time to show love to others. Appreciate those you care about. It could be friends, family, or colleagues. Send heartfelt messages or small tokens of gratitude.
  • Volunteer: Spend the day giving back to your community by volunteering at a local charity or organization. Helping others can bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose. This isn’t logical, but mental health experts swear this approach works.
  • Enjoy calm moments: Solitude is medicine when done in a wholesome way. Embrace the opportunity to spend time alone, reflecting on your goals, aspirations, and what truly makes you happy. The calmness helps clear your mind and changes your perception. Sometimes, all we need is to step on the brakes, breathe, reflect, and recalibrate our lives.

So you see, Valentine’s Day is not just about romantic love. It’s also about celebrating all forms of love, including self-love and love for those around you.
