1. Drake reveals he’s taking a break from music to focus on his health

Drake revealed that he is taking a break from music to focus on his health following the release of his new “For All the Dogs” album. “I probably won’t make music for a little bit,” the Toronto native said on Friday, October 6, during an episode of his show “Table for One” on Sirius XM’s Sound 42. “I’m going to be real with you. I need to focus on my health, first and foremost, and I’ll talk about that soon enough. Nothing crazy, but just like, you know, I want people to be healthy in life.”

He continued, “I’ve been having the craziest problems for years with my stomach. I’m just saying what it is. So, I need to focus on my health and I need to get right, and I’m going to do that. I have a lot of other things that I would love to focus on. So, I’ma lock the door in the studio for a little bit. I don’t even know what a little bit is. Maybe a year or so, maybe a little longer.”

2. Mavin Records reportedly seeking investment or sale

One of Nigeria’s and Africa’s foremost labels, Mavin Records, is reportedly open to investment or an outright sale. In an article published by Billboard on October 6, Mavin Records is in the process of receiving external investment to either acquire a part of the label or make an outright sale. The article revealed that interest has been shown by different investment companies and major record labels, with Universal Music Group (UMG) and HYBE leading the race.

According to Billboard, the investment and outright sale are valued at $125 million and could rise to $150 million or $200 million. Mavins have already signed collaborative deals with international outfits. Virgin Music, which is an independent distribution company under UMG, distributes Rema’s music in the United States. Mavin Records was founded by Nigerian music executive Don Jazzy after disbanding his previous Mohit Records.

3. South Africa: Tyla makes it to Spotify’s global top 40 chart

Tyla is beaming with pride after her hit song Water entered Spotify’s Top 40 on the global chart. Reacting to the news, the singer took to her timeline, writing, “This is for South Africa.” In 2021, the singer signed with US label Epic Records and has since been making strides in the entertainment industry. She joined Chris Brown on his European tour, which started in London on February 14 and ended in Paris on March 26. She has also been gaining increased global fame.

4. Burna Boy and Phyno hit the studio together for the first time in 7 years

The entertainment industry might just be witnessing another crossover of two of the biggest acts in Nigeria as Burna Boy and Phyno have been pictured together in the studio for the first time since the explosive release of the hit song “Link Up” in 2015. Phyno, who recently announced that he would be releasing the music video of the viral song “Do I,” on Monday, October 9, took to his social media platform on Saturday, October 7, to share a video of himself in the studio with the Grammy award-winning singer.

Fans took to social media to express their excitement about the news, as the last time the duo worked on a project together, one of the biggest rap songs to date, “Link Up,” was created alongside MI. It is, however, uncertain if the song the duo have together would be “Do I,” but fans are eagerly anticipating more news about the announcement of the project.

5. Simone Biles becomes gymnastics’ most decorated athlete in history

Simone Biles is only two months into her return to competition, and already she has rewritten history after being recognized as the most decorated gymnast in the sport’s history. The 26-year-old showstopper earned her 27th—her 21st gold—world championship medal on Friday, October 6, in the women’s all-around final at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

The victory marked her sixth individual all-around title. Since launching her career a decade ago, she has earned 34 medals across various competitions, including the Olympics. Prior to her history-making win on Friday, the title of most successful gymnast was held by Vitaly Scherbo, a Belarusian athlete who became the first gymnast to secure six gold Olympic medals during the 1992 Games in Barcelona.
