The Best Designs From Paris Fashion Week SS24 Shows

A fashion and pop culture writer who watches a lot…
Finally, Paris. Paris Fashion Week SS24, which took place at the end of fashion month, was a nine-day schedule that included shows from a number of newcomers to the fashion capital as well as the city’s renowned design houses, including Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Balenciaga, and Saint Laurent.
These included a one-time presentation of Marni’s newest collection by Francesco Risso in Karl Lagerfeld’s former private residence, Peter Do’s Paris debut after previously exhibiting in New York, and Louise Trotter’s debut collection for Carven after serving as the creative director of Lacoste.
Elsewhere, we saw returns to Paris Fashion Week from Maison Margiela and Mugler, as well as a raft of younger labels; highlights included Duran Lantink, Kiko Kostadinov, and Vaquera, each bringing their distinct, energetic style to the week.
Victoria Beckham’s spring/summer 2024 collection displayed a beautiful combination of feminine and masculine attire, drawing inspiration from the English countryside, her own dance background, and the concurrent introduction of her own fragrance line. While sheer and silk gowns with stitched-on bosoms cascaded down the runway, blazers over knee-length shorts, accessorized with brogues and knee-high socks, paid homage to rural sports culture. The collection flaunted large knit sweaters worn over knit bodysuits or sweaters with plunging wire necklines. Since femininity isn’t always held to lace and bows, the edges of shorts and dresses were scalloped, and field jackets were styled without (visible) pants with the tiniest tightness at the waist. The collection undoubtedly had a luxe feel to it.
Gabriela Hearst’s formative time at Chloé was coming to an end, and boy, did she give. The legendary French house’s elegance, confidence, and femininity were all present in her farewell collection, but it also remained committed to the aesthetics and principles that set her apart as a designer. Her use of a botanical theme to gently reference her support for sustainability resulted in chiffon panels hung from models’ chests like blooming flowers and bunches of ruffles that spread out like vines. The attention was kept on Hearst’s imaginative yet wearable designs thanks to a nearly totally black-and-white color scheme that was occasionally broken up by flashes of yellow, coral, and silver.
The creative director of Marni, Francesco Risso, accommodated all of it, including stripes and tartan, wild silhouettes and tiny hemlines, sheers and leather. These stylistic components “have always been there, and yet we found them again,” according to the show notes, and devotedly fell in love with them anew. This passionate rediscovery was evident in a collection that was simply animated. The presentation progressed to a beautiful climax outside in the garden just as you start to get tired of dressing up in the opulent parlor. This show was everything but dull; it was a vibrant procession of hues, textures, and shapes.
