O
ver centuries, the definition of beauty has changed from one society to another, each celebrating as the pinnacle what it holds dear. What we particularly love about the beauty standards in today’s world is how much room individuality gets to shine, often ignoring anyone who dares to make it conform. This was evident last week as Black women dominated the style scene flaunting a certain air of authentic beauty forceful enough to make necks turn.
The Looks
Makeup
Over the past weeks, the whole world has been engulfed in Barbiemania thanks to Barbie the Movie. One would think that with the movie now live in theaters, the Barbie fever will subside. But no. We’re still seeing pink. Last week, President Barbie, Issa Rae donned a sassy velvet pink swimsuit from Ivy Park and accompanied it with a corresponding face beat. Rae’s makeup featured shimmering pink eye shadow across her lids punctuated by a sharp, winged liner. Soft brows and understated lips were used to tie the girly look nicely together.
As Issa Rae was going all presidential in pink, Chloe Bailey brought even more color to St. Lucia for a thrilling carnival. The songstress thought it wise to complement her peacock-like attire with brightly-colored eye makeup that hit hard. Her lavender eyeshadow received a dash of metallic silver and dust of black and brown tones that struck a good balance. As if the bright hue wasn’t enough, Bailey incorporated colorful crystals to the eye look for more sparkle. As expected, the rest of her doll-up was muted so as not to compete with her beautiful eyes.
Hair
Meanwhile, Marsai Martin reminded us why maroon is such a flattering hair color for dark skin when she debuted her side-part flipped hairstyle making a case for the hue.
