South African actor Thuso Mbedu joins the likes of H.E.R., Viola Davis, Jane Fonda, and more after she was announced as the L’Oréal Paris brand ambassador and spokesperson for Sub-Saharan Africa. Per a statement, “The Woman King” actor will bring her perspective to global advertising campaigns, product launches, and public appearances. The partnership between the two “is set to revolutionize beauty standards and inspire a wave of self-worth and confidence across the continent.”

Mbedu made her first appearance for the beauty brand as a guest of honor on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, where L’Oréal Paris is an official partner. L’Oréal Sub-Saharan Africa president Burkhard Pieroth said they were excited to welcome her to the L’Oréal Paris family.

2. Burna Boy and Quavo spotted together in a video shoot

Nigerian megastar Burna Boy appears to have an upcoming release with American rapper Quavo. In the early hours of May 28, Burna Boy was spotted on the streets of Miami together with Quavo with the duo engaged in a video shoot. The African Giant had earlier performed in Afronation Miami where he headlined the opening day on May 28 and thrilled fans with some of his classic hits.

The video suggests that the duo might have a collaboration on the way and the prospect has excited fans on social media. Burna Boy is one of Africa’s leading international talent and the Grammy-winner has collaborated with several international megastars.

3. Bola Tinubu inauguration: Fuel subsidy to be removed in Nigeria

The new president of Africa’s largest democracy, Nigeria, has used his inaugural address to make a major policy announcement to ease pressure on government finances. Bola Tinubu said the decades-long subsidy on petroleum products was being scrapped. “Fuel subsidy is gone,” he told a packed crowd in the capital, Abuja. He won disputed elections with a promise to renew hope — but he faces tough economic and security challenges. It is not clear when the new policy will kick in, but ending the subsidy will lead to a rise in the price of petrol and could have a knock-on effect on other prices. Previous Nigerian governments have tried and failed to end the subsidy that was first introduced in the 1970s.

Despite its oil wealth, Nigeria is unable to refine enough crude to meet local demands so it imports petroleum products, which are then sold at a government-set price. But the subsidy is a huge drain on public finances. Last year it gulped 4.3trn naira ($9.3bn; £7.5bn) and for the first half of this year, 3.36trn naira was budgeted for it. The new president said the subsidy could no longer be justified and that the funds would instead be spent on public infrastructure and to improve the lives of people.

Grammy-winning rapper Future has often taken it upon himself to give back to his local community in Atlanta. Among other things, his Freewishes Foundation has hosted a Christmas shopping spree, revamped his high school weight room, and launched a scholarship for college freshmen. His latest effort helps prepare students in ATL for a future in STEM. The “BACK TO THE BASICS” emcee and the Freewishes Foundation teamed up to open a state-of-the-art STEM lab for Atlanta students.

Here, local youth can attend interactive classes and be paired with mentors in the science, tech, engineering, arts, and math fields. In doing this, the charitable organization is working to expand access to areas of study that are often ignored in underserved areas. The lab is located at Bessie Branham Park in Kirkwood, where Future grew up. It has pledged to help support all students who strive to pursue STEM as a career. Thuso Mbedu L’Oréal Ambassador

5. Jude Bellingham wins Bundesliga Player of the Season after team misses out on title on final day

Jude Bellingham received the Bundesliga Player of the Year award as a consolation prize after Borussia Dortmund missed on winning the title. Borussia Dortmund squandered a two-point lead and conceded the league title to Bayern Munich after they only managed a 2-2 draw against Mainz on the final matchday. Despite all the disappointment of losing out on the title on the final day, Bellingham did manage to bag the coveted title.

The English international enjoyed a stellar campaign with the German side as he scored 14 goals and provided seven assists in 42 matches. Having been linked with a move to Real Madrid in the summer, the 19-year-old apparently bid farewell to his teammates a day after losing the Bundesliga title race. It is believed that Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have already struck a deal worth £108 million ($133m), with £87m ($107.4m) guaranteed and a further £21m ($26m) in performance-related add-ons. He will soon be unveiled as a Los Blancos player.
