1. Rihanna and Tems lose at 2023 Oscars

Rihanna and Tems’ “Lift Me Up” lost the 2023 ‘Best Original Song’ category to “RRR” from the film “Naatu Naatu” during last night’s Oscars. The same thing happened earlier this year at the Golden Globes. Before the category was lost, Rihanna looked breathtaking during her ethereal performance of “Lift Me Up.” The song, which featured contributions from Tems, Ryan Coogler, and Ludwig Göransson, is an ode to resilience and grace.

Danai Gurira introduced Rihanna and called the Barbados native royalty in her own right. Gurira also paid homage to the late Chadwick Boseman. Complete with a string section, Rihanna stood center stage in a sheer jumpsuit covered in diamonds as she delivered an emotional and unforgettable performance.

2. Burna Boy makes history as ‘Last Last’ gets RIAA certification

Nigerian megastar Burna Boy has recorded another giant stride as his hit single “Last Last” has surpassed a million units in sales in the United States. According to news published by reputable chart news platform Chart data, Burna Boy’s “Last Last” received an RIAA platinum plaque after it surpassed a million copies in sales in the US.

“Last Last” was released in 2022 as one of the lead singles off Burna’s 6th album Love, Damini.” The single quickly became an international smash hit as it spent multiple weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at No. 44. With “Last Last” getting a platinum plaque, Burna Boy became the first Nigerian artiste with two RIAA platinum plaques as a lead artiste.

Rapper Costa Titch has died, his family confirmed in a statement. The 28-year-old rapper collapsed while performing at the Ultra Music Festival at the Expo Centre in Johannesburg on Saturday night. “We are thankful for the emergency responders and all those present in his last hours on earth. As a family we are faced with a difficult time as we try to make sense of what has befallen us and we ask that we be afforded the time and space to gather ourselves,” the statement read. Fans captured his collapse on the Ultra stage.

Costa Titch, whose real name was Costa Tsobanoglou, hailed from Mbombela in Mpumalanga and had been in the entertainment industry for a few years as a dancer, but recently branched out into rap. His style of rap, aesthetic, and language of choice made him the talk of the town when he broke into the industry.

Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

4. Michell Yeoh makes history with ‘Best Actress’ win at 2023 Oscars

For the first time in its 95-year history, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has awarded the Oscar for best actress in a leading role to a self-identified Asian actress. Michelle Yeoh accepted the Oscar for her role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” in which she plays Evelyn Wang, the Chinese first-generation immigrant owner of a laundromat around whom the film’s absurdist multiverse revolves.

The caveat “who identifies as Asian” is necessary because two actresses – nominee Merle Oberon and two-time Oscar winner Vivien Leigh – hid their Asian ancestry and chose to pass as white. Previous winners with Western Asian ancestry – Cher (Armenian), Salma Hayek (Lebanese), and Natalie Portman (Israeli) – do not identify as Asian. Yeoh received a lengthy standing ovation as she walked to the podium to accept her award.
