The Best Designs From New York Fashion Week FW23 Shows

A fashion and pop culture writer who watches a lot…
New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2023 has come and gone, with 75 shows and presentations running over the course of five days. In comparison to its triumphant post-pandemic Spring/Summer 2023 edition from last September, this one arrived with much less fanfare. However, that doesn’t mean that the designer offerings were subpar because the brands who showcased made it a mission to impress.
The calendar is considerably shorter this year due to the absence of some local favorites, including Peter Do, Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford, and Maryam Nassir Zadeh. Blame the weather or the shaky global economy. Marc Jacobs, who is often a tent pole of the week, also decided to go his own way and presented his tribute to the late Vivienne Westwood a week early.
Rodarte’s enchanted ode to goth fairies on February 10 served as the event’s official launch. After temporarily relocating to Los Angeles, Kate and Laura Mulleavy returned to the city in style by arranging a wedding reception straight out of a grim fantasy book. The bride arrived dressed in a gigantic tinsel gown with wings and a crown, while the bridesmaids and guests wore costumes with sparkling fringe and several jet-black vampirical gowns that would look equally at home on Wednesday and Morticia Addams.
Meanwhile, Proenza Schouler kept its promise to honor the women who have worn its apparel by showcasing sleek lines, buttery separates, and a ’70s-inspired take on Dior’s New Look for its 20th anniversary (read: blazers pinched at the waist).
Another highlight was Coach’s trend-setting presentation. It’s all about appreciating the classics this season. Consider denim, leather, and shearling in a wide range of joyful sizes and colors. The collection was displayed in a variety of distressed-knit dresses, double-breasted trench coats, denim shapes, and edgy leather at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. The collection blends a homage to the past with a modern attitude as a celebration of the brand’s iconic American heritage and characteristics.
Graceful and refined, the goal of Tory Burch’s Fall/Winter 2023 collection was to build a versatile modern outfit. With an undone attitude, the brand examined the concept of perfection this season. On the runway, there were women wearing simple silhouettes that exude power, confidence, and sophistication in soothing neutrals and primary tones. The collection features standout pieces including lapel-adorned skirts, mesh dresses, giant padded jackets, slouchy sweaters, boot-cut jeans, and silk button-down blouses.
With some of New York’s most beloved brands, like Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Coach, Gabriela Hearst, and more having showcased this season, fashion week had more than a few show-stopping moments. Here, Style Rave has rounded up the best looks from all of your favorite brand’s new collections.
