n appropriate attire boosts the walk, talk and has one feeling on top of the world. There was something about last week that had fashionable Black women applying pressure on their stylists to deliver stimulating looks that easily remained etched in our memories and tongues. Given the premise of the week’s events — from award shows to high-profile weddings — the dress codes encouraged the exceptional and interesting that saw outfits bursting with color and overflowing with ritzy details.
The looks
At 25, Zendaya became the youngest to receive the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards (CFDA) Fashion Icon Awards, and it’s not hard to see how it came to be as she, once again, stunned in a red-hot Vera Wang midriff-baring bandeau bra top set and Bulgari diamonds because a queen has to sparkle and shine through.
A highlight of the week was when Hip Hop icon, Missy Elliot received the 2,708th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Ciara did the honors of presenting her with the star in a fashion-forward Sir Baba Jagne custom leather coordinated set. The outfit features an open-back bolero accompanied by a corset top and matching pants.
Nigerian media girl, Stephanie Coker understood the all-black assignment as she was spotted in an Ann Usman blazer dress. Consider this a refresher that a little black dress is no cliche and if you’ve ever been stuck in a style rut where the LBD saved the day, then you’re well aware of the power this classic staple wields.
The styles shared by Black celebs and top fashion influencers last week were nothing short of chic, edgy, and glamorous and it’s safe to say that we are, as usual, living vicariously through them. Black style queens.
