Since 1948, a particularly coveted red carpet comes alive every first Monday in May. It’s none other than the Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala and also known as the Met Ball. Celebrities do their best to look the part as dictated by the theme for the annual fundraising gala held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.
The theme every year is different and so are the costumes we get to see. From “Fashion Plate” in 1971-1972 to “Dance” in 1986-1987 and “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” in 2018, Hollywood celebrities have never failed to totally bring it on on the Met red carpet. But last year’s event was without a doubt, one of the most memorable as the stars went above and beyond in interpreting the 2019 theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion” in looks that were exaggeratedly ironic, humorous and theatrical. For 2020, the proposed theme, “About Time: Fashion and Duration” traces the history of fashion from 1870 to present in the celebration of the museum’s 150th anniversary. However, the 2020 Met Gala was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and even though we were excitedly looking forward to seeing what iconic looks this year’s red carpet would bring, we believe that safety and health trumps all. The 2020 Met Gala may not have taken place today but we can look back in time and relish some of the most iconic looks that have graced the Met Gala red carpet in recent years. From Rihanna’s 2015 outfit by Guo Pei, which was termed “the omelette dress” to Beyoncé’s 2016 beaded latex dress by Givenchy, these are the looks that will continue to stay fresh in our memories as we continue to patiently wait for when next the Met Gala will bring us more unforgettable fashion moments.
