The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba successfully delivered a 68-year-old Nigerian woman of a set of twins, a boy and a girl, following an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) conception on April 14.
The new mom, Margaret Adenuga has undergone three previous IVF procedures before finally having twins. Her husband Noah Adenuga, 77 told CNN that since they got married in 1974, they had desired to have a child of their own and they never gave up even after the failed attempts.
Wasiu Adeyemo, Chairman, LUTH Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday that the woman was pregnant for the first time. Mr Adeyemo said that she was delivered through an elective Caesarean section, at 37 weeks gestation. He said that the IVF and embryo transfer were done at a facility outside LUTH and referred to LUTH at early gestation and was subsequently managed until she was delivered. In his words, “this is the first in LUTH, Nigeria and Africa.”
Dr Adeyemi Okunowo, who delivered the babies, told CNN a specialist team was assembled at the hospital to monitor the pregnancy because of her age. “As an elderly woman and a first-time mother, it was a high-risk pregnancy and also because she was going to have twins but we were able to manage her pregnancy to term.”
