1. Ubi Franklin donates 4 months salary to fight coronavirus
Nigerian talent manager and special adviser on tourism in Cross River state, Ubi Franklin, has joined the fight against coronavirus with his own act of kindness. Ubi Franklin took to social media via his Instagram page to share the news of his donation.
Ubi Franklin has decided to give out his salary for four months to help the fight against coronavirus. The talent manager shared an official document backing this claim on his Instagram page. He also accompanied the post with a caption.
The caption reads: “Donation of my four months’ salary towards the fight against COVID-19.”
2. Lagos discharges seven COVID-19 patients
The Lagos Government on Thursday said it has discharged seven patients from the Mainland Hospital, an infectious disease facility in Yaba area of the state. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this via his verified Twitter handle @jidesanwoolu.
As it stands, Lagos leads the toll of Nigeria’s COVID-19 infections with 145 of the overall 276 cases. So far, Lagos has discharged 39 patients, while two patients have been evacuated and the state had recorded three COVID-19-related deaths.
3. World Bank predicts sub-Saharan Africa recession
Sub-Saharan Africa will this year suffer its first recession for 25 years as a consequence of the coronavirus outbreak, a World Bank report predicts. In a grim assessment, the bank says that the region’s economy could shrink by as much as 5.1%.
It points to the impact that the virus will have on Africa’s key trading partners as well as a fall in commodity prices as the main causes. Several African countries are using lockdowns to control the virus’ spread.
These will also negatively affect economic growth on the continent, which has had some of the world’s fastest-growing economies in recent years.
4. Canada says the death toll could hit 22,000
The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak could hit 22,000 by the end of the pandemic, health officials in Canada said. Officials outlined the two most likely scenarios, showing that between 11,000 and 22,000 people would die.
The officials told a briefing that they expected between 500 and 700 people to die by April 16. The death toll so far is 436, with 19,290 positive diagnoses.
5. Southampton Premier League club players to defer salaries
Southampton has become the first Premier League club to announce their players will defer part of their salaries amid the coronavirus pandemic. Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and his staff, as well as the board of directors, will also adopt the measure until June.
Premier League clubs previously said they would ask players to take a 30% pay cut in order to protect jobs. However, the Professional Footballers’ Association said that would hit tax contributions to the NHS.
On Monday, Premier League players launched the #PlayersTogether initiative to generate and distribute funds to the NHS.
