1. Children among eight killed in Syria as missile hits school
At least eight people, including five children, were killed on Tuesday as missiles hit a school in northwest Syria sheltering displaced civilians, a monitor and opposition activists said.
The strikes targeted the village of Jobas near the town of Saraqeb in southern Idlib province, the last rebel stronghold in the war-torn country.
Syrian government troops also besieged a Turkish observation post in the area but have not attacked it so far, opposition activists said. Opposition activists say more than 40 villages and hamlets are now under government control in southern parts of Idlib.
2. Central African Republic traders in deadly battle over militia taxes in Bangui
At least 35 people have died in clashes between traders and militiamen in the Central African Republic capital, Bangui, the local Red Cross says. Dozens more have been injured and about 50 shops burned down.
The fighting took place in the mainly Muslim PK5 district of Bangui, an area often troubled by violence. The clashes started when shop keepers fought back against a local militia which has been trying to force them to pay taxes.
Ongoing violence since a rebel group seized power in 2013 has forced more than a quarter of the CAR’s 4.7 million people to flee their homes.
3. Police shoot Wizkid’s fan dead at Starboy Fest in Lagos
A video making the round on social media has caused a stir amongst many as according to the person who shared it, a fan was shot dead last night at Wizkid’s Starboy Fest concert.
Wizkid had his Starboy Fest concert last night and, as expected, many of his fans were there to celebrate with him. However, after the Starboy Fest ended, a fan was said to have been shot dead by police officers.
“POLICE BRUTALITY IS NOT A JOKE!!! I literally saw the Cop shoot this Fan Dead over an argument at #STARBOYFEST.” Twitter user @kloud_official shared.
Wizkid has promised to follow the case through till justice is served.
4. Islamic State in Nigeria ‘beheads Christian hostages’
The Islamic State group has released a video claiming to show the killing of 11 Christians in Nigeria. IS said it was part of its recently declared campaign to “avenge” the death of its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi during a US raid in Syria in October. No details were given about the victims, who were all male, but IS says they were “captured in the past weeks” in Nigeria’s north-eastern Borno State.
The 56-second video was produced by the IS “news agency” Amaq. It was released on December and analysts say it was clearly timed to coincide with Christmas celebrations.
President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the apparent killings and urged Nigerians not to let themselves be divided along religious lines.
5. Pogba launches own anti-racism protest
Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has decided to make a personal protest against racism following the ongoing “ignorance” demonstrated at football stadiums throughout Europe. The 26-year-old France star came off the bench during United’s a 4-1 win-win away to Newcastle on Thursday, when he wore black and white wristbands during the warm-up.
‘No to racism’ and ‘We are one’ read the wristbands that Pogba asked his team-mates to join him in wearing before the match, with the World Cup winner then presenting his own wristband to a young fan in the crowd.
Pogba later posted an image of that moment on Instagram with a Martin Luther King quote – “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that” – and the hashtag #NoToRacismWeAllOne.
