Slow Down: What We Can All Learn From Virgil Abloh’s Doctor’s Order

Virgil Abloh’s busy schedule, which includes designing for Off-White and Louis Vuitton, multiple brand collaborations and DJ gigs around the world, has now taken a toll on his health. Like Nigerians would say “body no be firewood.” According to Vogue US, Virgil often flies internationally as much as eight times a week.

The Ghanaian-American artist revealed to Vogue back in August that he was having a harder time than usual “bouncing back” from an overseas trip. On September 9, Virgil Abloh further revealed to Vogue that he is shifting gears as advised by his doctor. According to him,

“I was just tired, so I went to the doctor. Everything is fine, but the doctor told me ‘this pace that you’ve sort of pushed your body – to fly all these miles, do all these different projects – is not good for your health.'”

The creative director who was recently appointed to the board of the CFDA has taken his doctor’s order seriously and has been working in Chicago for the last three months. He explained that he is taking time out of his schedule to take his children to school.

As part of his time off, Virgil Abloh will not be attending his Off-White show at Paris Fashion Week on September 26, as part of the French capital’s womenswear fashion week. His team claims he has designed a new “creative approach” for the upcoming fashion show that will “include crowd participation” and not require his attendance. Virgil Abloh, on the other hand, told Vogue, “My Off-White team is equipped to handle this. And my Louis Vuitton team is expert-level. The shows will go on.”

It was also reported that Virgil Abloh has declined most of the invitations he has received to participate in events and conferences as his doctors have advised him not to travel. He is using this as he does with everything else, as a way to propel me forward.

The key take away from this is that no matter how hard we want to push ourselves, we all need to frequently take time out and rest. Think of it as recharging our batteries or simply put, we’ve got to prioritize self-care! That time out can also be spent with family. However you choose to take a break, the time off work allows you to come back stronger and better. After all, health is wealth!

Need tips for self-care? Here are 5 simple ways to begin and develop a highly personal and nourishing self-care practice.
