Boyband reunions are not new occurrences, especially these days where our favourite boybands from a decade plus years ago including Westlife who are working on their comeback album, Backstreet Boys and Boyzone have all reunited and have been touring North America and Europe.
The Jonas Brothers were probably everyone’s favourite band back in 2009. The band which is made up of Kevin Jonas, Joe Jonas and Nick Jonas rose to fame in 2005 through their show on Disney Channel. The band split some years back as the brothers decided to take time apart to focus on themselves and personal projects.
They might have taken a break from music but they definitely didn’t take a break from serving fashionable looks, especially Nick and Joe. From award shows to premieres and festivals, their style always served and still serve as an inspiration to fans who held onto that in the absence of their music. Joe, in particular, has been busy serving couple goals across the globe with wife, Priyanka Chopra.
Fast forward to 2019, the Jonas brothers have reunited with the release of a well-produced and polished fifth album titled ‘Happiness Begins.’ The album shifts between upbeat songs and euphonious sounds. Their comeback has been tagged the biggest and most impressive comeback of the year.
The first single from Happiness Begins, ‘Sucker’ debuted at number one on Billboard charts. This only proves that this album contains the best songs the group has made to date. The impact of Nick’s solo career and Joe’s DNCE disco sound could be noticed on the less complex and melodic album. Rather than implementing new pop sounds on the album, the brothers found a way to make their distinctive sounds work together perfectly. This leads to a more relaxed, funky mix of electronic sound and R&B to go with their original pop sound.
The Jonas Brothers enlisted the help of producer and songwriter, Ryan Tedder – who has worked with an array of A-list artists including Adele, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Maroon 5 amongst many others – to bring in his slick production skills and incorporate elements from major musical genres into Happiness Begins. Greg Kurstin also contributed his pop production skills on songs like ‘Every single time’ to deliver a mix of textured sounds.
‘I believe’ is a soulful slow song with a jacked-up synth which also explores the depth of power pop. ‘Hesitate’ served as a love letter to Priyanka Chopra and Sophie Turner while the perfect blend of vocals and harmonies, the frizzy guitar sound and down tempo of ‘Cool’ reminds us of the Jonas Brothers from a decade ago.
The Jonas Brothers did such a great job on Happiness Begins. The low points are so few and well gapped that they are almost forgotten once you get into the rhythm of the piquant closers of the album, ‘Rollercoaster’ and ‘Comeback’. The Jonas Brothers are back with possibly one of the best pop albums of the year.
