For their pre-spring 2020 resort collection, Oscar de la Renta looks to Japan for inspiration while featuring Nigerian supermodel Mayowa Nicholas. The creative directors for this collection Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia definitely nailed the travel theme.
The Oscar de la Renta resort 2020 collection features the Wabi-sabi culture – a culture that teaches one the acceptance of transience and imperfection. To perceive the beautiful and objects of art in their nature, genuine and without excesses. This was embodied in the strict lines of trouser suits and strapless corset evening dresses as seen on Mayowa Nicholas and Marte Mei van Haaster.
Light dresses with an underlined waist belt which are a direct reference to the kimono – the Japanese national costume, made the Oscar de la Renta resort 2020 collection. According to the beliefs of the Japanese, each person should from time to time look at the flowers and admire them, experiencing delight at the contemplation of the beauty of nature. Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia made sure that you fully enjoy the flowers and decorated the collection with embroidery and floral print.
Mayowa Nicholas and Marte Mei van Haaster were also seen in outfits with chain effect inspired by the Meiji Era. This explores the introduction of Japan to western culture. Meticulous gold chains decorate waistlines reminiscent of military garb of the late 18th century. Effervescent dip-dyed chiffon also flows freely in the ODLR collection, emphasized by intricate hand weaving and a shoulder tie detail for an ultra-feminine silhouette.
Throughout the collection, the Boro – a Japanese technique of quilting tattered fabrics to make beautiful garments – was used. The collection effortlessly showcased day and night time looks for the Oscar woman.
