Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua was crowned the 2023 Miss Universe at the culmination of the annual beauty pageant, which took place on Saturday night in El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador. Anntonia Porsild of Thailand placed first runner-up and second runner-up is Moraya Wilson from Australia. The winners of 84 countries’ national pageants had competed at this year’s Miss Universe, judged by a panel including model Halima Aden, “Queer Eye” star Carson Kressley, TikTok influencer Avani Gregg, and two former Miss Universe winners, Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad & Tobago (Miss Universe 1977) and Iris Mittenaere of France (Miss Universe 2016).

Miss Colombia, Camila Avella, and Miss Puerto Rico, Karla Guilfú, rounded out the top five, while another member of the top 10, Spain’s Athenea Pérez, was crowned the pageant’s Miss Congeniality. Palacios succeeds the 2022 Miss Universe, R’Bonney Gabriel of the USA.

2. Burna Boy becomes world’s most-followed artiste on Audiomack

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, aka Burna Boy, has hit another milestone as he becomes the world’s most-followed artiste on the global music streaming platform, Audiomack. The “African Giant” surpassed 5 million followers on the platform, making him the first to reach the milestone in Audiomack’s history. Not long ago, “Lonely At The Top” by another Nigerian singer, Asake, set the record as the first song to hit 100 million streams on Audiomack.

On Thursday in Cape Town, former US First Lady Michelle Obama, global philanthropist Melinda French Gates, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, and former South Africa and Mozambique First Lady, Graça Machel led a discussion on ending child marriage. Fresh off their trip from Malawi, Obama, French Gates, and Clooney visited Ludzi Girls Secondary School and learned about the work of the girls and the AGE Africa program, which is supported by the Girls Opportunity Alliance.

During the discussion, the global powerhouses spoke on the value of the girl child, her education, and the need for financial backing for the empowerment of young girls. Global philanthropist French Gates shared how educating a boy or girl child was not an either-or situation, as investing in the education of children will make society better. Obama, who wore a dress from South African luxury designer MaXhosa, called on those in power to open up the funding needed to help end child marriages.

4. Diddy, ex-girlfriend Cassie settle sexual assault and sex trafficking case out of court

American rapper and music executive Sean Combs, aka Diddy, and his estranged girlfriend, singer Cassie, have reached a settlement a day after she filed an explosive lawsuit alleging rape and physical abuse against the legendary rapper. Cassie, whose real name is Casandra Ventura, had, in a suit filed in Federal District Court in Manhattan on Thursday, accused Diddy of plying her with drugs and alcohol, forcing her to have sex with male prostitutes, and raping and beating her shortly after meeting her in 2005 until 2018.

However, Cassie’s lawyer announced on Friday that the duo had settled the lawsuit filed by his client a day earlier. Diddy added in his statement: “We have decided to resolve this matter amicably. I wish Cassie and her family all the best.”

5. Kylian Mbappe reaches 300th career goal

Kylian Mbappe completed his hat-trick against Gibraltar on Saturday in some style, with a lob from long range bringing up 300 career goals. The France captain had already found the net twice as his side began an utter annihilation of their opponents, but he saved the best until last for his third strike. Spotting the goalkeeper off his line, Mbappe fired a shot mere yards from the halfway line, completing a fine hat-trick and reaching a staggering 300 career goals at just 24 years of age. The Paris Saint-Germain star is now third on France’s all-time goalscoring list.

Mbappe is arguably the best player in the world right now, but he has yet to pick up a Ballon d’Or, with 36-year-old Lionel Messi the latest winner of the award. The 24-year-old will be targeting those accolades in years to come, and now that he has brought up 300 career goals, he may have his sights set on becoming one of the greatest goal-scorers of all time.
