Nigeria confirmed its first fatality from coronavirus, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control announced today. The 67-year-old man, Suleiman Achimugu, who was the former managing director of Nigeria’s Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC), had underlying medical conditions including multiple myeloma and diabetes and he was also undergoing chemotherapy died in the capital Abuja after returning to Nigeria following a medical procedure in the UK.

The rest of his family members have been quarantined and we join other Nigerians to pray for strength for his family to bear this loss and get through this time.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 election, Atiku Abubakar, has announced that his son tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19). He made his known via his verified Twitter handle on Sunday.

My son has tested positive for coronavirus,” he tweeted.

According to the former Vice-President of Nigeria, his son has been moved to Gwagwalada Specialist Teaching Hospital in Abuja for treatment.


2. Naira Marley gets dragged on Twitter over callous coronavirus tweet

Naira Marley is in the news again and this time around he is getting dragged on Twitter over his tweet on the spread of coronavirus. The music star had taken to his Twitter page on Monday, March 23, 2020, where he had reacted to the surge of coronavirus.

Unlike most celebrities who have called out the government, advised people on social distancing and so on, Naira Marley tweeted what many have described as being callous.

Naira Marley’s coronavirus tweet hasn’t gone down well with a lot of Nigerians on social media as they have dragged him continuously.


3. Big jump in coronavirus cases in South Africa

The president is expected to announce new measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus

The number of coronavirus cases in South Africa has jumped to 402 – the highest in sub-Saharan Africa. This means there’s been an increase of 128 since the last announcement on Sunday night.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on Monday night about ways to prevent coronavirus from spreading any further. He is also expected to reveal a stimulus package for small businesses and how he thinks the country’s fragile economy can survive.

4. UK coronavirus death toll rises to 303

The number of people who have died from COVID-19 in the UK has risen by 46, bringing the death toll 303, according to the National Health Service.

That is up from 37 deaths on Sunday. National Health Service England said the patients whose deaths were announced on Monday were aged between 47 and 105 years old and all had underlying health conditions.


5. Spanish football suspended indefinitely because of coronavirus crisis

All football in Spain, including La Liga, has been put on hold indefinitely while the country deals with the continued spread of coronavirus. Spain’s top flight was postponed for two rounds of matches earlier in March and the country is in a state of emergency.

Football will not resume until the Spanish government deems it safe to do so without any health risk. As it stands, defending champions Barcelona lead La Liga by two points.
