1. Boko Haram slaughters three, abducts seven on Maiduguri-Damaturu highway

Three passengers were reportedly slaughtered and seven others abducted by suspected members of Boko Haram who laid siege on Maiduguri-Damaturu highway. According to the securities, the incident happened between Jakana -Auno at about 11:15 a.m. on Thursday.

The three persons were slaughtered and their corpses left beside the highway around Auno village. It was also learnt that seven passengers were forcefully taken away by the insurgents at the same spot where the three persons were killed.

2. Trump approves new sanctions against Iran

US President Donald Trump has authorised new sanctions against Iran and eight of its senior officials, noting that “we want Iran to simply behave like a normal nation and we believe the sanctions we impose today further that strategic objective.

US Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, and Secretary of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin, made this known on Friday while briefing the press in Washington DC. Also, Pompeo said by announcing the sanctions, Trump is delivering on the pledge he made after an attack on American forces in Iraq.


3. American horror story actor Harry Hains dead at 27

Actor Harry Hains, 27, is dead. Harry’s mom, actress Jane Badler, took to social media on Thursday to share the heartbreaking news with her followers. In a message to readers, Jane said that Harry had died earlier this week.

On Jan 7 my beautiful son died. He was 27 and had the world at his feet,” Jane wrote in a tribute post on Instagram. “But sadly he struggled with mental illness and addiction. A brilliant spark shone bright too short a time. I will miss you, Harry, every day of my life.”

Jane, who appeared on the Australian TV series Neighbours, went on to tell her followers that there will be a service for Harry in Los Angeles on Sunday, Jan. 12. Harry’s passing comes just over a month after his 27th birthday.

4. Havoc for farming as locusts invade Kenya

Kenya’s agriculture minister says an invasion of locusts is wreaking havoc on food production and grazing land, describing it as an unprecedented threat. Mwangi Kiunjuri said the swarms had now reached central Kenya after crossing over the border from Somalia, where they have destroyed vast quantities of crops. He said aircraft and pesticides were being made available to spray affected areas.

A plea he made for Kenyans to share photographs on social media of any locusts they encounter has been mocked by some. The UN’s food agency says the locust invasion in the Horn and East of Africa is the worst in 70 years.


5. Serena Williams & Caroline Wozniacki reach Auckland Classic semi-finals

Serena Williams reached the Auckland Classic semi-finals with a straight-set victory over Germany’s Laura Siegemund. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion beat 73rd-ranked Siegemund 6-4 6-3.

Williams, whose last singles title came at the 2017 Australian Open, will play fellow American Amanda Anisimova after she beat Eugenie Bouchard 6-2 3-6 6-4. Caroline Wozniacki reached the semi-finals with a 6-1 6-4 victory over the 2019 champion, German fourth seed Julia Gorges.

The Dane, who will retire after the Australian Open in Melbourne, will next play unseeded American Jessica Pegula. Wozniacki and Williams are through to the doubles final in Auckland after beating Belgian pair Kirsten Flipkens and Alison van Uytvanck 7-6 (11-9) 6-2.
