On the surface, our hairstyle is an extension of our overall style but for many women, especially black women, the way we choose to wear our hair is a simple yet deep reflection of who we are, what we represent and what we seek to promote. Which explains why women like the late Maya Angelou, Chimamanda Adichie, Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o consistently show a preference for Afro-textured or African-inspired hairstyles.

Did you really think that it’s a coincidence that women whose brands represent everything pro-black, pro-women, and self-love often wear kinky-textured hair? Well, I don’t think so. In fact, these women rarely ever wear pin-straight hair as they strive to stay true to their true self, hair included. And the African hair tribe is definitely growing!

Whether it’s a TWA (teeny weeny afro), Fulani cornrows, or goddess box braids, more and more black celebrities and influencers are embracing African-inspired hairstyles in 2020. But they are not serving us the usual. Instead, they are experimenting and styling their hair in contemporary and fun ways, while passively encouraging their legion of fans and followers to do the same.

Whether it’s in the use of fancy adornments or a play on baby hair or just an innovative styling, we have rounded up the most creative African hairstyles we’ve spotted so far in 2020. These styles are unique, chic and are sure to help you stand out wherever you go.
