1. Nigerian teen stages kidnap for graduation party money

Police in Jos are investigating the circumstances of how a 15-year-old boy staged his own kidnap and demanded a ransom from his father for his release. The teenager and four of his older friends, who are now all in custody, demanded a 500,000 naira ransom. They had planned to use the money for their graduation party.

Three days before the staged kidnap, the boy’s father had sold his car to raise money for the family’s upkeep. The 15-year-old came up with his plan after searching the family home and failing to find the cash from the car sale. The friends pretended to be the kidnappers and contacted his father.

“They warned him the son had been taken far away from Jos and he should not report to security agencies. The father reported only after the threat became very serious,” the police spokesman, Mr Tyopev said.

The alleged abduction was foiled when officers tracked down the phone number used to make the ransom calls to an apartment in the city. The teenager and his friends were having a conversation when the police stormed the building.

“The father felt very terrible at the discovery. His son had not asked him for money for the party beforehand,” Mr Tyopev said.

Although the plan was the son’s idea, the expert execution of it by his friends – who are aged between 18 and 22 – has made officers suspicious. Police were now investigating if they had abducted people for ransom in the past, Mr Tyopev said.

Ethiopia’s state minister for women’s affairs has told the BBC the country’s goal to end both child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM) by 2024 was realistic.

Semenye Wube said it was an achievable target as Ethiopia was not starting from scratch to change these practices. One in every five girls below the age of 18 is married in Ethiopia, according to the United Nations.

“The main [issue] is a problem of attitude because FGM and child marriage is accepted as a norm,” Ms Semenye said at a BBC interview.

But she said her department would be working with religious leaders and elders in communities to change such cultural traditions.

President Donald Trump has on multiple occasions brought up buying Greenland (see cover image) from the Danish government and the White House counsel’s office has looked into the possibility, two sources told CNN.

The island’s government, however, said in a statement Friday it’s not going to happen: “Greenland is not for sale.”

Trump’s interest in buying Greenland was first reported on Thursday by The Wall Street Journal. The Journal reported that people familiar with the deliberations said the President has raised the issue during meetings and dinners, asking aides and listening seriously about the possibility and advantages of owning Greenland. He also asked his White House counsel to research the matter, according to two of the people.

Two of the people also told the Journal that Trump’s aides were divided on the issue, with some praising it as a solid economic strategy and others dismissing it as a passing fancy.

Seven-time winner Roger Federer lost in straight sets to 21-year-old Russian qualifier Andrey Rublev in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters. The world number 70 won 6-3 6-4 in just over an hour to set up a quarter-final against compatriot Daniil Medvedev. Swiss 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer, ranked third, plans to compete at the US Open later this month.

The defeat means he will have played just two matches in preparation, after an opening win over Juan Ignacio Londero. On Rublev, Roger Federer said: “He was excellent today. He didn’t give me anything. It was tough for me but an excellent match for him. I was impressed.

I just would have hoped for an overall better performance. He was mixing it up nicely on the serve and on the return he was really consistent.”
