5. Alcaraz’s Madrid Open title defense ended by Rublev

Andrey Rublev stopped Carlos Alcaraz from winning his third consecutive Madrid Open title. Rublev, the seventh seed from Russia, came back after losing the first set to beat Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, ending Alcaraz’s 14-game winning streak in Madrid. The 20-year-old, seeded second and was trying to be the first player to win three Madrid Open singles titles in a row. Next, Rublev will play either Taylor Fritz from America or Francisco Cerundolo from Argentina for a spot in the final.

After a nearly three-hour match against Jan-Lennard Struff on Tuesday, Alcaraz didn’t play his best against Rublev. Despite winning the first set, the two-time Grand Slam winner, who missed earlier tournaments in Monte Carlo and Barcelona because of a right arm injury, seemed tired. Rublev, taking advantage of this, hit 30 winners. This victory also ended Rublev’s four-game losing streak and added just one more ATP 1,000 title to his record. Carlos Alcaraz’s loss is another disappointment for Spanish fans in Madrid, especially after Rafael Nadal, a five-time champion, was defeated by Jiri Lehecka in what might be Nadal’s last game in the tournament.
