1. LeBron and Bronny James make history as NBA’s first father-son duo

Los Angeles Lakers legend LeBron James and his eldest son, Bronny James, are set to etch their names in basketball history. The Lakers selected Bronny James with the 55th pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft, creating the first father-and-son pairing to ever be teammates in the league. This marks a dream come true for the elder James, who has, for years, openly spoken about his desire to share the court with his son.

LeBron, entering his 22nd season, is a four-time NBA Most Valuable Player and one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Bronny, a 19-year-old guard, has been a highly touted prospect since his high school days. Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka acknowledged the historic nature of the pick but also emphasized Bronny’s talent. “That feels like something that could be magical,” Pelinka said of the James duo.

2. Burna Boy makes African history in a sold-out London Stadium concert

Nigerian superstar Burna Boy continues to shatter records, becoming the first African artist to ever sell out the iconic London Stadium twice! This historic feat took place on Saturday night, June 29, as part of his ongoing “Love, Damini” world tour. The 80,000-seat stadium was packed with fans eager to witness Burna Boy’s electrifying performance. This achievement further cements his status as a global music icon and one of Africa’s most prominent figures in the industry.

News of the sold-out concert sparked celebration across Nigeria, with fans highlighting the African Giant’s international recognition and incredible talent. This isn’t Burna Boy’s first time conquering London Stadium. In June 2023, he made history by becoming the first African artist to ever sell out the venue solo.

3. Nicki Minaj congratulates Davido and Chioma on their wedding

Trinidadian rap royalty Nicki Minaj took a moment to celebrate Afrobeats superstar Davido and his new wife Chioma during her ongoing Pink Friday 2 World Tour (also known as the Gag City Tour). Performing in Portugal on June 27, Minaj paused before launching into their hit collaboration “Holy Ground.” “Wait, hold on, hold on,” she said to the cheering crowd. “Did Davido get married?” The audience erupted in confirmation.

With a smile, Minaj beamed, “Congratulations to Davido and Chioma! I guess I was ahead of my time when I wrote this verse,” before diving into her rap on the song. This heartwarming public acknowledgment comes just days after Davido and Chioma tied the knot in a lavish Lagos ceremony on June 25.

4. Olamide’s “Ikigai” breaks Spotify Nigeria’s opening day record in 2024

Nigerian rap king Olamide continues to reign supreme on the streaming charts. His surprise EP, “Ikigai,” which dropped on June 27, has set a new record for the most opening day streams on Spotify Nigeria in 2024. The 7-track project, titled after the Japanese concept of “reason for being” or “life’s purpose,” resonated strongly with fans, garnering a whopping 1.86 million streams within the first 24 hours of its release.

This impressive feat surpasses not only Olamide’s previous albums’ opening day numbers but also outshines other projects on Spotify Nigeria this year. Shallipopi’s “Shakespopi” previously held the record with 1.59 million streams on its first day. This record-breaking performance underscores Olamide’s unwavering popularity and influence in the Nigerian music scene.

5. Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz joins Juventus in £42.35m deal

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz has completed a £42.35 million transfer to Italian giants Juventus, ending his three-year spell at Villa Park. The 26-year-old Brazilian becomes the latest addition to a Juventus side looking to reclaim the Serie A title after a second-place finish last season. Luiz, known for his tenacious tackling and passing range, established himself as a key player for Villa since joining from Manchester City in 2021. He made 98 appearances for the Villans, scoring nine goals and helping them reach the FA Cup final in 2022.

Juventus are reportedly looking to bolster their midfield options, and Luiz’s arrival adds experience and dynamism to their engine room. The fee is a significant one for Aston Villa, showcasing Luiz’s value and their willingness to do business for the right price. Luiz will be aiming to make his mark in Serie A and compete for a place in Brazil’s national team squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
