SR International: Zooey Deschanel On ‘Vanderpump Rules,’ Her ‘Property Brothers’ Romance + More

In the hit sitcom “New Girl,” Zooey Deschanel plays a quirky teacher living in a loft full of guys. A millennial “Friends” of sorts, the show wrapped on Fox in 2018 and got a streaming boost from Netflix. By the constant flow of social-media memes—TikTok videos about her character Jess Day’s “twee core” style; jokes on Twitter about her roommates Nick, Schmidt, and Winston—one could easily mistake it for an ongoing series. Would she ever reprise her role as Jess?
“It kind of depends on the circumstance,” Ms. Deschanel, 43, said. “I wouldn’t want to spend the rest of my life doing reboots, but I definitely had a wonderful time and would be very happy to revisit.”

Ms. Deschanel—who reportedly has a net worth of $25 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth—lives in Los Angeles with her partner, Jonathan Scott, a television personality known as one half of the “Property Brothers.” She has two children, Charlie and Elsie, with her ex-husband, Jacob Pechenik. Together they run the company Lettuce Grow, which sells tools for growing produce at home.
Later this year, Ms. Deschanel will join the cast of the Apple TV+ drama “Physical,” playing a sitcom star who starts a fitness empire. Here, she talks about loving Taylor Swift, renovating a home with her contractor beau, and how she writes songs (including the “New Girl” theme).
Here are a few things Zooey Deschanel revealed to WSJ. Magazine…
On what time she gets up on Mondays, and the first thing she does:
Every Monday is different. If I have my kids, I’m waking up at 6:30 a.m., then I have to pop right out of bed and make sure that they’re dressed and fed and ready for school.
On breakfast:
I make a pot of coffee, and it’s all for me because Jonathan doesn’t drink coffee. I don’t really eat breakfast a lot. I snack around, snacky snack. It would be my dream for someone to make me an omelet, but that would never happen in my life.
On how she prepared for her upcoming role in the series “Physical,” where she plays a sitcom star who dives into the world of fitness:
I worked out pretty much five days a week and tried to eat pretty healthy because it’s a lot of leotards. I also play a figment of Rose Byrne’s character Sheila’s imagination, so I kind of have two characters. One’s a version of the sitcom character, and one’s the real person who’s an actor who has a little bit of a fitness empire. I have two different wigs and I get to wear all kinds of fun outfits.
On her songwriting routines:
I just need to be by myself for several days. I need to be able to play around with something, come back to it. I need that time, I can’t have people interrupting, I can’t feel like people are listening. It feels like a private thing to me.
On her recent TikTok post about being in her “Anti-Hero” era, and whether she considers herself a Swiftie:
Yeah, I do, I love Taylor Swift. She’s such a nice person. She’s actually a cool person.
On TikTok “twee core,” which is all about her clothing from “The New Girl”:
I love it. I love twee. I love “twee core.” I consider myself an advocate of twee. Zooey Deschanel Net Worth
On what attracts her to a business idea:
We founded Lettuce Grow six years ago or something, that was all because I was trying to eat more healthily when I was pregnant and I realized how hard it was. Fresh vegetables lose a lot of their nutrients as they sit on the shelf. There are a lot of benefits to having the greens come to maturity at your home. It was trying to solve all these things at once.
On the most exotic thing they’ve grown:
We grew a watermelon! You can get crazy.
On her favorite or funniest memory from her and Jonathan’s two-year home renovation process:
Well, it depends on what you think is funny. When you’re renovating a home during a pandemic, there was something at every turn where we didn’t know it was going to take this long. We decided to build the solarium, which has lots of steel and glass. And then of course, lumber we needed for the house, we had a pandemic that made all those prices go way up. There was a while when all of our glass was sitting on a dock.
On her favorite room or nook in her new home:
I love the solarium, because it’s the most unusual room. It’s a big glass room that’s two stories high and I had had a dream of having one for a long time. When I first met Jonathan, I told him about how much I wanted a solarium. He made it happen. It feels like you’re indoors and outdoors at the same time—like you’re in Europe or something.
On her and Jonathan’s favorite things to do together:
Escape rooms, that’s our thing. We like to take the kids to family movies. We like to go to parties and have parties.
On her favorite splurge:
Clothes. I have a lot of vintage pieces.
On the favorite piece in her wardrobe:
When I was pretty young, I bought a Courrèges collection at a vintage fashion expo. I still have that. I was really young and I didn’t have that much money and they were all my size. The lady kind of took, not pity, on me but she knew how much I wanted it so she gave me a really good deal. I think I bought four Courrèges pieces for $1,000 or something.
On what she does for self-care and relaxation:
I give myself mini-facials all the time. I have a little face steamer and then I do face masks.
On what she’s reading and watching:
I’m more of an audiobook person. But then I end up switching to podcasts, they’re different ways of taking in information with my ears. The last book I read was “The Tools.” I don’t know if you saw the documentary Jonah Hill did [“Stutz”]. It’s his therapist [Phil Stutz’s] book. I’m watching “Poker Face” and Bravo shows. I just started watching “Vanderpump Rules” because of the [cheating] scandal. Now I’m hooked.
On the one piece of advice that’s guided her:
Just don’t go away. If you stick it out, even when it’s hard, that’s where you get the real value and that’s where you start seeing success. Sometimes it takes so much longer to see success than you think it’s going to. Especially in entertainment, there’s so many ups and downs. I’ve had that many times in my career. There’s always going to be good and bad and if you believe in what you’re doing—just stick with it. Zooey Deschanel Net Worth
