When it comes to travel experiences, solo trips are often presumed to be boring. Nevertheless, some of the best moments of our lives are born from exploring and cultivating new adventures on our own. With traveling up 85% up from pandemic levels (according to IATA) and our shift back into the normalcy of life, we all need to take a journey of self-reflection, and a solo trip will do just that. However, to travel solo, you need some guiding tips.

One of the purposes of travel is to experience the world beyond your usual environment. From food to people, music, and wildlife, planet Earth sure has it all. However, in order for you to make the most of your trip, especially a solo trip, you will need to be well-armed to avoid any hiccups that may occur. Yes, it’s our goal to have a hitch-free adventure but we all know that’s not always the case. Therefore, we’ve curated these travel tips, for both safety and fun, to keep you informed as you set out to make the next memorable experiences of your life. Wherever that may be.

#1. Have a budget

When visiting new destinations, it’s easy to get carried away by all the said location has to offer, and on many occasions, this can burn through your pocket. Considering that you’ll be traveling alone, it’s imperative to have a budget and stick with it. This should include accommodation, food, shopping, transportation, etc. It’s also a good idea to have some backup cash in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

#2. Do some research, but make it fun

Before arriving at your desired location, do some homework on the region. Details like weather conditions, security, lodging options, popular landmarks, hot spots, and cost requirements matter. Although combing through the information on your own can be a bit of a bore, a variety of content from travel websites, bloggers, and social media influencers is available for you to dissect and feed on for valuable knowledge.

#3. Prioritize safety

Taking the necessary safety precautions is a must, especially in a region you’re not familiar with. Good steps in this direction will be having your facemasks (depending on the requirement of the region) and sanitizers, valid travel insurance, and identification. Also, it’s advisable to arrive during the day as you don’t want to land at night, particularly in a region you aren’t familiar with.

#4. Stay connected

An important tip for traveling solo is to stay connected with family and friends. Even though you’re experiencing this destination on your own, that doesn’t mean you should go MIA. Therefore, let your loved ones have a tab on you in order to know your whereabouts. For instance, let them know the hotel you’re staying at, when you step out for the day, and when you get back to your hotel. Simple things like this can go a long way.

#5. Learn the language

At first glance, this may seem like a reach but knowing the basics in the local language can go a long way. By breaking such communication barriers, mingling with the natives can open up interesting doors to adventurous memories. Likewise, it hastens up the process of getting any form of help when needed.

Solo traveling might have an aura of loneliness and dullness hovering around, but it’s good to know that these moments can push you toward the unknown. In other words, challenge yourself to be led by the city when this happens. Allow yourself the confidence that comes with wandering around illuminated monuments, busy shops, and eccentric restaurants. Carpe Diem!

#8. Join a tour

Although feeling like a stereotypical tourist is something most of us avoid, the feeling of companionship that joining a tour offers should not be overlooked. Similarly, an added benefit is the organized and well-informed chance you get to learn about new cultures while making new friends along the way.

#9. Use common sense

Yes, you’re here to have fun but have fun with common sense. Don’t put yourself in a situation that could get you hurt. For instance, don’t drink too much and ensure to keep your drinks in your line of sight. Also, avoid going anywhere alone with a stranger. Plus, if you ever feel uncomfortable, you can walk into a public place like a restaurant or catch up with a large group of people. Finally, if someone asks if you are traveling alone, say you are on your way to meet a spouse, relative, or friend. Keep these tips handy for a blissful solo travel experience with a hedge of safety around you.

#10. Get out of your comfort zone

Whether you’re an Eat, Pray, Love kind of traveler or a thrill-seeker in search of adrenaline-inducing activities — like riding in a hot air balloon or bungee jumping — stepping out of your comfort zone is pivotal. Not only do you get to immerse yourself in something different, but you also get to unlock new levels of self.

#11. Pick a trip tailored to your personality and needs
