Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2020 is currently underway and the city of love and light truly came alive as Anthony Vaccarello, creative director at Yves Saint Laurent, showcased the YSL SS20 collection on a spotlit runway beneath the glittering lights of the Eiffel Tower.

For the YSL SS20 collection, Anthony was inspired by what Yves Saint Laurent created throughout the 20th century. This inspiration was, of course, channelled into modern and contemporary designs. The 87-piece collection, which was closed by Naomi Campbell in a fully sequined Le Smoking suit, paid homage to the original Le Smoking Tuxedo Suit.

Created in 1966 by YSL, the Le Smoking was the first tuxedo of its kind, exclusively designed for women. It earned major attention in the fashion world and in popular culture but the collection also received negative responses initially. YSL combined elements from both classic men’s suit and women’s clothing to create a tuxedo made just for women. The result was a more feminine collar, with a softer and curvier blazer silhouette to embrace a woman’s body shape. The pants were also adjusted to help elongate a woman’s leg.

According to the designer, “I want to say: this is the house of the tuxedo if you need a tuxedo you have to come to Saint Laurent because otherwise, it’s like a fake tuxedo.”

The YSL SS20 collection also featured pleated lamé skirts, chiffon blouses, silk shirts unbuttoned to the navel, chic necklines, sexy silhouettes, Western-like boots, tailored jackets, the shortest versions of shorts, velvet tux jackets alongside sheer gold-embroidered dresses and skintight stirrup trousers. Strappy sandals emblazoned with the signature YSL logo were a part of the accessories which made it to the runway. The gorgeous materials, opulent embroidery and simple designs emphasize Saint Laurent’s luxury yet relatable aesthetic.
