NYFW: Ralph Lauren’s SS19 Collection Is All About Cross-Generational Appeal

Central Park was the landmark venue for a landmark event as fashion elites gathered for Ralph Lauren’s 50th anniversary show. In particular, the Bethesda Terrace in central park was the perfect location for such a big birthday bash. There was a crowd of red carpet regulars, high society folks, famous friends and well wishers all who turned out for New York Fashion Week especially to show their loyalty and respect for the brand.

Among these friends were Oprah Winfrey, Kanye West, Robert De Niro and Jessica Chastain who all sat front row at the show. Famous designers like Diane Von Furstenberg, Jason Wu, Tommy Hilfiger and Michael Kors were also on the front row.

The Bethesda Terrace was transformed into a carpeted runway as the design house showcased their Spring/Summer 2019 collection. As models strutted down the carpet, it became obvious what the inspiration behind the collection was: a display of a wholesome all-american cool.

The collection featured plaid lumber jack shirts, cable knit jumpers for women, high-low mix of sequinned skirts, dungarees for men and heavy coats made in rich fabrics like wool, leather, sequins and much more textures. Interestingly, the lineup was filled with lots of western influences, something that is rarely found in a spring/summer collection.

It took the second part of the show to grasp that the concept of the collection was less about clothes than it was about cross-generational appeal. After all these decades, Ralph Lauren shows no sign of slowing down and hence proving that the brand has a diverse market which adds to its continued success and longevity.

To close the show, Ralph Lauren said after hugging his friends, family and supporters:

“I don’t dream this big, but this is beyond my dreams tonight,”

Here are our favourite looks from the collection…
