he word “lazy” has never been a way to describe me until now. The fatigue is real, and with deadlines piling up, I sometimes feel like I want to escape from it all. Worse still, recent days have seen me go without occasional sparks of motivation. It seems I can no longer conjure my energy levels to work for me. I can attest that laziness in your 30s is real. Perhaps, it’s your body’s way of telling you it’s tired from the past decade of youthful career push, and now, just wants a break.

In truth, the whole thing isn’t because you are lazy, per se. It could just be a pointer to something that desperately needs your attention. And this is what I am learning. If your body stops cooperating with you, listen attentively before it drops the baton on you. Moreso, if this cycle of “laziness” has started affecting your daily output. Now is the time to do something about it—perhaps, go slow on the stress levels and incorporate a lifestyle change.

What are the possible causes of laziness in your 30s?

In your 30s, things you used to get away with could finally slow you down. This could involve years of hard work and juggling multiple responsibilities without taking a break. There’s a word for it: burnout. Indeed, the pressures of career, family, and personal life can take their toll on you, leading to stress, fatigue, and decreased motivation. In addition, poor diet choices, lack of exercise, inadequate sleep, and excessive screen time can contribute to feelings of lethargy.

But what if none of the issues above relate to you? Perhaps this fatigue and laziness you’ve suddenly encountered in your 30s might be due to underlying mental health issues. Conditions like depression, anxiety, and ADHD can affect your motivation and energy levels, making it difficult to stay focused and productive. Additionally, if you’re feeling unfulfilled in your career or personal life, you may struggle to find the motivation to pursue your goals and aspirations.

Hormonal fluctuations, such as those experienced during pregnancy, postpartum, or perimenopause, can also impact energy levels and mood. In the same vein, certain medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism or chronic fatigue syndrome, can cause fatigue and decreased motivation. Addressing these underlying factors through lifestyle changes, stress management techniques, and seeking support from a therapist or healthcare professional, can help improve motivation and energy levels.

  • Manage stress: Practice stress management techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or mindfulness, to reduce stress levels and increase resilience.
  • Break tasks into smaller steps: If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a task, break it down into smaller, more manageable steps. This can make it easier to get started and maintain momentum.

  • Be inspired: Identify what motivates you and incorporate it into your daily life. Whether it’s setting rewards for completing tasks, finding inspiration from others, or reminding yourself of your long-term goals, find what works and leverage it.
  • Remain put-together: Keep your workspace and living environment tidy and organized to reduce distractions and improve focus. Use tools like to-do lists, calendars, or productivity apps to stay on track with your tasks and goals.
  • Seek support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or psychotherapists for support and encouragement. Talking about your challenges and seeking advice can help you overcome laziness and stay motivated.

By implementing these strategies consistently, you can overcome laziness and increase productivity and fulfillment in your 30s.
