There is evidence to show that black people were in Britain since Roman times. During the Tudor period (1500s), an African musician named John Blanke was one of King Henry VIII’s trumpeters. Over the succeeding centuries and years, black people continued to play even more important roles – from the slavery period through colonial times to contemporary times – that define the Britain that is today.
