Over the weekend, the AfroPunk Festival held its usual celebration of black arts and culture in the city of Johannesburg. The festival has taken place every year since its inception in 2005. The aim of the AfroPunk celebration is to bring out people of all works of life to come to a point where they can enjoy art, fashion, black culture and of course, music.
Last weekend, Dec 30th – 31st, thousands of people flocked to Johannesburg for AfroPunk’s inaugural festival in Johannesburg to celebrate alternative Africa as well as introduce the city to a global black culture. Johannesburg is the fifth city to host AfroPunk, after Paris, London, Atlanta and its home base of New York. It was the first time the festival came to Africa and it lived up to expectations with incredible body arts, soft but bold feminine silhouettes, power poses, extravagant hairstyles, artistic pieces of jewellery and lots more. AfroPunk always has a little bit of something for everyone and this time it was no different.
