1. Pioneering actress Cicely Tyson dead at 96
Boundary-breaking actress Cicely Tyson has died of natural causes at the age of 96. Announcing that she has died, Cicely Tyson’s manager, Larry Thompson said in a press release: “Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Today she placed the last ornament, a Star, on top of the tree.” Cisely Tyson dead at 96 – full details.
The Emmy and Tony-winning actor refused throughout her career to play roles she considered demeaning to Black women, such as drug addicts or maids. She’s known for playing strong Black protagonists in films such as 1974′s “Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and “Sounder,” earned an Academy Award nomination for the latter in 1973 and an honorary 2018 Oscar. She also earned two Emmys for the former.
Tyson’s memoir, “Just as I Am,” was published this week. Our condolences go out to her family and friends. Cicely Tyson died.
2. Nigeria: The Milkmaid makes Oscars 2021 international feature film eligibility list

Nigeria’s Oscar submission has scaled through one stage of the International Feature Film category selection. “The Milkmaid” was recently listed in the Oscars ‘Eligibility for Consideration’ list, a first-time achievement for Nigeria since we joined the Oscars’ race in 2019.
Genevieve Nnaji’s “Lionheart” was disqualified at this stage in 2019 for not meeting the language requirement. Nigeria’s disqualification got international attention with the award’s critics insisting that the disqualification was unmerited as English is Nigeria’s official language. For ‘The Milkmaid’, making the eligibility list solidifies its move to the voting stage.
3. South Africa: Leandie du Randt announced as host of ‘Love Island South Africa’

Actress, presenter, entrepreneur and motivational speaker Leandie du Randt will host the much-awaited season one of “Love Island South Africa.” Du Randt, a runner-up in season seven of “Strictly Come Dancing,” said hosting the show has been a privilege.
“Hosting ‘Love Island South Africa’ is one of the biggest privileges in my life and career so far. It has always been on my vision board to host a big show in South Africa and this is the perfect opportunity to see this come to fruition. I am also very excited to meet the beautiful contestants in the villa,” Du Randt said.
4. Ghana: Police step up enforcement on mask-wearing

The Ghana Police Service has begun an exercise to randomly stop vehicles carrying two or more people to check if occupants on board are wearing their face masks. The exercise, which began yesterday, January 28, is a directive from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and is part of the moves the police are undertaking to enforce the mandatory wearing of face masks.
Addressing the minister’s press briefing to give an update on COVID-19 in Accra yesterday, the Police Director of Public Affairs, Supt. Sheila Kessie Abayie-Buckman said the exercise had already begun in some of the regions and was being scaled up to cover the entire country.
5. Cristiano Ronaldo investigated for COVID-19 birthday trip

Juventus footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is being investigated by Italian police over a trip he allegedly took to celebrate his girlfriend’s birthday. He is accused of breaking COVID-19 rules by traveling between the regions of Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta. Now-deleted footage posted on social media showed the couple on a snowmobile in a mountain resort, the same day Georgina Rodriguez turned 27.
Italy is seeing hundreds of deaths and thousands of infections daily. The country was hit badly in the early stages of the pandemic last year and is now in a political crisis after struggling to bring down cases in a second wave. Valle d’Aosta police said they were investigating the couple over the alleged trip to the Courmayeur ski resort.
